Check our Facebook page every weekday for our RD of the Day, as we put a much-deserved spotlight on a dietitian who’s either making headlines or writing them and delivering their expertise through the media. Here are this week’s featured RDs.
Ronda shows a great example of a dietitian serving her community, especially its older members, with a piece that's important, easy-to-understand, and offers direct resources to those in need. In her article, "Nutrition for a Healthy Brain", she explains how brain health is linked to nutritional choices, physical activity, and social activities, no matter what age you are. She also provides a great list of foods that promote healthy brain function and offers contact information for healthy Senior Dining and "evidence-based Healthy Living classes" in the community. For her service to her community, to seniors and to healthy brain function, Ronda was Monday’s RD of the Day. Ronda is a clinical dietitian at the Aging & Disability Resource Center of Central Wisconsin.

Cathy does the kind of work that gets little fanfare, but is so crucial to professionals and their patients: research. The Big Ten Network puts a spotlight on Cathy as a “Pathfinder”, one who is “passing by the typical, well-trod career paths and blazing their own trails.” She provides nutrition research support services for investigators who are conducting clinical studies that involve controlled feeding, food- and supplement-intake assessments, or both. Her current projects include looking at the food and supplement intake of people who have the genetics for Huntington’s disease, which causes deterioration in the brain’s nerve cells over time, and working with a clinical professor of medicine who is assessing the effectiveness of a nutrient-rich diet she developed as a treatment for multiple sclerosis. For her dedication to working on important research that helps those in need and for truly being a “Pathfinder”, Cathy was Tuesday’s RD of the Day. Cathy is a research dietitian at the University of Iowa.

Elisa shares her expert opinions about the importance of fiber in the Yahoo Health article, “25 Of The Best Foods For Fiber.” She explains that adults 19 and older should aim for 21 to 38 grams per day, but most Americans fall woefully short of that goal and only consume about half of what they should. In this article, which offers a slide show of this impressive list of fiber-rich foods, Elisa explains it simply, so any RD’s client can understand: “(Fiber) promotes a healthy gastrointestinal system, helps prevent constipation, and plays a role in lowering blood cholesterol levels. It also helps regulate blood sugar levels and helps you feel full, which may help you with weight management.” For raising awareness about this important nutritional component in a high-profile setting, Elisa received Thursday’s RD of the Day honors. Elisa is the founder and president of Zied Health Communications, LLC, based in New York City the author of Younger Next Week along with three other books. Bless was featured in the Los Angeles Daily News in preparation for National Pack a Lunch Day on Tuesday, which helps everyone in the family and can make great use of healthy leftovers like fruits, veggies and whole grains. “Most people think that sack lunches are limited to sandwiches, and that’s the challenge,” Masatani said. “Leftovers like whole grain pizza, hardboiled eggs, steamed vegetables, fruits and different cheeses can make a great lunch. The key is to mix and match.” For her packing suggestions applicable from the school lunchroom to the workplace, Bless was selected as Friday’s RD of the Day. Bless is a clinical dietician at Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills, CA.
